Google's New $35 Chromecast Plays It Safe

Later this month, we'll expand public testing of this new feature with Google Pixel users at restaurants in New York, Atlanta, Phoenix and the San Francisco Bay Area! Google has sold an estimated 7 million Pixels over the past two years, nearly imperceptible next to the 3.6 billion phones shipped during that time, according to the research firm International Data Corp. The company rolled out third generation Pixel devices along with innovative products such as Home Hub 2018 and Pixel Slate.

As usual, the Pixel phones focus heavily on Google's search engine, maps, digital assistant and YouTube video service. It's an OLED display, as it was previous year, and it fills much of the front of the phone. We also know that Pixel phones always get the latest Android updates as soon as their released, while phones from other vendors typically take months to be updated.

Google's major event was today and there was a lot to talk about, but the most exciting thing is Google's new smartphone duo.

The most significant one is the new Top Shot feature, which comes burst mode with intelligent HDR processing to make sure you get a great shot in the most important moments by giving you several to choose from. The device will live up to its name as it umbrellas the rest of Google's Home products. Google showed off a new dashboard for the Google Home app that lets you manage multiple smart devices from one app.

However while the Portal is designed primarily for making video calls over Facebook Messenger, Google's device does not feature a camera at all. Preorders begin today with a release date of October 22, and the device is priced at $149. Loup Ventures estimates that while Amazon will have 52 per cent of the market this year and Google will reach 28 per cent, Google will surpass Amazon by 2021 with 48 per cent versus 37 per cent.

Again, Google is attacking its rivals on price.

The matrix is clearly borrowed from Android, Google's mobile operating system. There's also the all glass back that has a transition from matte to gloss.

The Pixel 3 features a 5.5-inch screen and the 3XL has a 6.3-inch screen. Google debuted some new features like Top Shot which essentially continually takes photos while you are taking a selfie, from 1.5 seconds before to 1.5 seconds after snapping the photo. What Google says the Pixel 3 XL improves the picture quality dramatically through AI. One of them transcribes voicemails in real time, so users can decide whether to pick up the call or keep ignoring it. There's also a prominent "chin" at the bottom of the phone.

With the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, Google also announced Pixel Stand which works as a docking station as well as a wireless charger. The device costs US$599, or US$798 including the optional attachable keyboard. The company now sells Chromecast Audio dongle as dedicated separate audio streaming device.
