Trump 'concerned' about missing journalist; Saudis deny involvement

The Washington Post has published an image it described as the last surveillance photograph of its missing Saudi contributor.

The image was given to the Post by someone close to the Turkish investigation, and released by the U.S. daily soon after Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan challenged the Saudis to prove he left the consulate unharmed.

Turkish investigators believe that Khashoggi, 59, was killed shortly after he entered and his body was later removed from the premises, a US official and sources close to the investigation said.

Since then, Turkish and Saudi officials have offered conflicting accounts of his disappearance, with Ankara saying there was no evidence that he had left the diplomatic mission and Riyadh saying he exited the premises the same day.

Erdogan's adviser Aktay, who is also a friend of Khashoggi, said that Turkish authorities believed the group of 15 Saudi nationals were "most certainly involved" in his disappearance.

But the disappearance of the journalist, however prominent, may not affect President Trump's bet on the Saudi heir to the throne.

Fusun Arsava, an global law professor at Ankara's Atilim University, told Al-Monitor that even if reports of Khashoggi's murder were true, that would be extremely hard for the Turkish authorities to prove.

"I would like to confirm that.Jamal is not at the consulate nor in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the consulate and the embassy are working to search for him", Al-Otaibi said in an interview at the consulate. A USA official said that Turkish investigators believe Khashoggi was probably dismembered and his body removed in boxes and flown out of the country.

Riyadh says Turkish experts and related officials can visit the building, Anadolu Agency reports. And hopefully that will sort itself out.

"I am following the (issue) and we will inform the world whatever the outcome" of the official probe, the president told reporters in Ankara.
