Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin Announces Support For Kavanaugh

The US Senate has narrowly advanced President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to a final vote.

"I believe Dr. Ford". Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested, including actress Amy Schumer.

A final vote on Kavanaugh's nomination is set to be held Saturday, but moments after Collins spoke, Sen. To vote to confirm Kavanaugh, you would have to be confident that he wouldn't abuse his power.

Republicans have a 51-49 majority in the Senate.

All eyes are on several swing senators for Saturday's final vote.

At that point, Murkowski came out against Kavanaugh while Flake said he would back him barring a last-minute surprise.

"There was absolutely no corroboration of (Ramirez's or Ford's) allegations", Kennedy said.

Collins said the FBI investigation appeared to be thorough.

Gonzaga law professors Ann Murphy, Jane Korn and Mary Pat Treauthart said they found Kavanaugh's anger and response to senators' questions troubling.

Ms Murkowski won her seat as a write-in candidate after having lost the Republican primary in 2010 and has been a reliably centrist vote ever since. The activist anticipates another wave of donations following the senator's decision.

While the comments by Flake and Collins were positive, neither explicitly announced support for Kavanaugh.

While the vote was a victory for the GOP, lawmakers can vote differently on the climactic confirmation roll call, and Collins told reporters she would announce later Friday how she would go. That fury was reflected openly by thousands of boisterous anti-Kavanaugh demonstrators who bounced around the Capitol complex for days, confronting senators in office buildings and even reportedly near their homes.

Three GOP senators and one Democrat remain undecided about elevating Kavanaugh to the high court. If confirmed, he would deepen conservative control of the court. Ford claims Kavanaugh attempted to rape her at a small party when the two were in high school, but Kavanaugh denies the claims. Other people who know Kavanaugh have accused him of dishonestly characterizing his drinking habits during his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee last month.

McConnell says senators won't be "hoodwinked" by those who have tried to "smear" Kavanaugh's reputation.

The Kavanaugh fight has riveted Americans weeks before November 6 elections in which Democrats are trying to take control of Congress from the Republicans. Don't forget social media.

"If they push forward without any attempt with hearing what she's had to say, I'm not comfortable voting yes", Flake said at the time, according to Politico. After earlier calling Ford's claim 'very credible, ' the president mocked her testimony at a rally Tuesday in Southaven, Mississippi.

A reported nine people were interviewed in the FBI's five-day investigation.

All three spent hours in a secure room in the basement of the Capitol Thursday reviewing the roughly 45 pages of Federal Bureau of Investigation interviews.

"When considering a lifetime appointment to Supreme Court, we must evaluate the totality of the circumstances and record before us", Heitkamp said in a statement. Republican leaders sounded unmoved.
