Three members of the ISS crew returned to Earth

Russia may take an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) on board a Soyuz spacecraft for a short training mission in 2022, a Russian space industry source as quoted by a Russian media report.

The two Americans performed three space walks to carry out maintenance during their 197-day stay at the orbiting lab.

If the mission proves successful, India will join an elite group of only three countries - Russia, US and China - which have the capability to launch a manned mission to outer space. Highlights included an investigation to study ultra-cold quantum gases using the first commercial European facility for microgravity research and a system that uses surface forces to accomplish liquid-liquid separation.

Upon landing, Russian recovery crews rushed to the scene in a helicopter.

The Russian daily Kommersant reported that an investigation at home was probing the possibility that U.S. astronauts deliberately drilled the hole in order to get a sick colleague sent back home-something Russian officials later denied. Early speculation on the cause touched on everything from a puncture caused by space debris to a manufacturing mistake to deliberate sabotage.

NASA said a spacewalk was being tentatively planned for November to gather more information.

A trio of scientists who spent almost 200 days in space have now landed safely back on Earth after departing the International Space Station.
