Melania Trump, who is in Africa to promote her children's welfare programme, described her visit to the Chipala primary school as "an awesome experience". The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has several active reading programs and retention-focused initiatives at schools in Malawi. Just 77 teachers educate more than 8,500 students who attend the school.

"No child in this country is without a book", Malawi's Education Minister Bright Msaka told the first lady.

But a few signs of protest were afoot, too, as President Trump is not widely seen as a friend of Africa.

She also visited a local traditional ruler, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, meeting him in Obama Hall.
