Kavanaugh confirmation could cost Republicans majority in Congress

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley has told NBC News that there is "no hint of misconduct" in the confidential Federal Bureau of Investigation report on sexual-assault claims against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

The FBI has now conducted six thorough investigations of Judge Kavanaugh, both in connection with his nomination to the Supreme Court and in prior government service.

"I might have been too emotional at times", he wrote of his Senate testimony last week.

A second Democrat who had been seen as a doubt, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, yesterday announced that she would be voting against Mr Kavanaugh's appointment.

Kavanaugh has vehemently denied the allegation leveled against him by Ford.

Kavanaugh's op-ed in The Wall Street Journal was published on the eve of a key procedural vote in the Senate on his nomination.

The first lady's journey came months after President Donald Trump frayed relations with remarks aimed at some African countries. She was also warmly greeted by the first lady of Ghana , Rebecca Akufo-Addo. "Thank you very much", she said with a smile.

While some Democrats have lent credence to her claims, most senators have avoided them.

On Thursday afternoon, retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens told a small gathering in Boca Raton, Florida, that Kavanaugh should not be confirmed, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Kavanaugh stressed that "a good judge must be an umpire-a neutral and impartial arbiter who favors no political party, litigant or policy" and who is not "swayed by public pressure".

"Part of why this investigation was asked for was it gets the burden off of the Senate and drops it into the FBI's lap", Anderson asserted.

The Senate majority leader also said, since there was no corroboration of the allegations, Democrats are now focusing on how Kavanaugh defended himself in his testimony.

Moreover, the inquiry focused mainly on the account of Ford, the research psychologist who alleges that a drunken Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were high school students in the Washington suburbs.

In a letter to President Trump, Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and Judiciary Committee ranking Democrat Dianne Feinstein discussed their understanding that "conducting background investigations on nominees has always been the FBI's standard practice, and it is common for such background investigations to be reopened when new information about a nominee becomes known".

In morning tweets, Trump decried what he said was "harsh and unfair treatment" of Kavanaugh, who has undergone previous FBI background checks for other federal jobs, and accused Democrats of obstructing the confirmation process.

Republicans have a narrow 51-49 Senate majority, and vice president Mike Pence will be available to cast a tie-breaking vote. Kavanaugh had been criticized, including by legal experts, for his temperament during the hearing. Democrats want a briefing from the FBI about the investigation, but Republicans declined that request.

Most Democrats opposed Trump's nomination of Kavanaugh from the outset.

Ms Feinstein said the White House may have limited the probe.

Speaking Tuesday night at a rally in Southaven, Mississippi, Trump attacked the credibility of Ford, who last week testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that Kavanaugh drunkenly assaulted her during a high school party in Maryland more than 30 years ago.

On Wednesday, all three took issue with Trump's mocking of Ford the night before at a political rally in MS that drew laughs from his supporters.
