As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, Tropical Storm Kirk was spinning to the west at 18 mph about 300 miles east of Barbados. Forecasters said it is expected to strengthen but doesn't pose an immediate threat to land.

Kirk is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 miles per hour, and this general motion is expected to continue over the next few days. "On the forecast track, the centre will move over the Lesser Antilles within the Tropical Storm Warning area Thursday night".

NHC says Kirk can produce total rainfall of 4 to 6 inches across the northern Windward and southern Leeward Islands - with isolated maximum totals up to 10 inches across Martinique and Dominica.

In its discussion of the storm, the agency said Kirk "is predicted to dissipate due to the strong shear over the Caribbean Sea in about 5 days, and several of the reliable global models show this occurring even sooner".

These rains may produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides on the islands.
