Government of Canada, schools closed Monday due to Ottawa tornado damage

The tornadoes ripped through Ottawa on Friday, specifically the neighbourhood of Dunrobin, about 35 kilometres west of Ottawa's downtown, before moving to Gatineau.

The mayor of Ottawa, capital of canada for which the area was hit Friday by a violent tornado that has caused major damage and about thirty wounded, estimated Saturday that some neighborhoods resembled a "war zone".

Hydro crews - including extra workers from across Ontario - were working around the clock to untangle and fix fallen power lines and restore electricity to the region.

"This is one of the two or three of the most traumatic events (the history) of our city", he added.

On Sunday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford visited Ottawa and toured the areas most affected by the tornadoes.

They said they'd arrived home just a few minutes before the tornado cut its swath through the neighbourhood.

"We're here to assure everyone in the region that's been affected that we'll spare no expense, we'll do whatever it takes to make sure we get people back on their feet", Mr. Ford said as he travelled through the community of Dunrobin, in the west end of the city, with Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.
