Mitch McConnell Says Republicans Will 'Plow Right Through' Nominating Brett Kavanaugh

Can the Senate Judiciary Committee enlist the FBI to investigate the claims of sexual assault brought by an accuser against Judge Brett Kavanaugh, nominee to the Supreme Court?

However, Ms Katz suggested there appeared to be room for negotiation when she sent a letter to the committee after the phone call, saying: "The only issue I said was a deal breaker was that Dr Ford can not appear at a hearing on Monday".

However, Prof Ford has set out conditions for her appearance which have yet to be agreed by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The proposal calls for Ford to testify first and Kavanaugh second.

There is no evidence to suggest Ford told her parents about an incident at the time, or that anyone in her family reported it to law enforcement in Maryland, where she alleges the attack took place.

Ford's lawyers had said on Tuesday she would testify only if the FBI first investigated her allegation.

But they're eager to avoid the spectacle of 11 Republican men cross-examining a woman who says she's been victimized by a man.

Those who work closely with the President say he has privately voiced suspicion about the #MeToo movement and complained that decades-old allegations could ruin men's lives in an instant. Chuck Grassley could respond to Ford's requests on Friday. Nonetheless, they also are inclined to believe he will, in the end, be confirmed: Just 11 percent predict he won't; 45 percent say he will. Kavanaugh has said that he is also willing to testify again in front of the committee. In the letter, Ford said she had received medical treatment after the assault, adding that "it is upsetting to discuss sexual assault and its repercussions, yet I felt guilty and compelled as a citizen about the idea of not saying anything".

Katz reiterated that Ford would like the FBI to investigate before her testimony.

During the 2016 campaign, at least 15 women accused Trump of misbehavior ranging from sexual harassment and sexual assault to lewd behavior around women. In the poll, conducted from September 11-17, 36% of U.S. adults surveyed did not want Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, up 6% points from a similar poll a month earlier, while 31% favored Kavanaugh's appointment. The Senate Judiciary Committee has yet to see it. The FBI could investigate Dr. Ford's allegations in a matter of days. It also looks less suspicious than demanding a hearing on Friday, or demanding Republicans postpone the process for weeks or more. Republican moderates could start to waver, effectively defeating the nomination - and infuriating the conservative base.

Prof Ford has accused Judge Kavanaugh of drunkenly pinning her to a bed and trying to remove her clothing at a house party in a Washington DC suburb when they were both teenagers 36 years ago. (Given that the Intercept and BuzzFeed are both online-only outlets, I'd guess the leaker trended younger.) And the very obvious reason they did so was because they were frustrated that Feinstein had held this weapon for two months and never used it, even during the closed session of Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing, leaving him on track to join the Court before the end of the month.

Mr. Trump's tweet comes just a day after Senate Democrats pressed him to order an FBI investigation into the allegations of sexual assault against Judge Kavanaugh.

For Trump, approval of Kavanaugh would cement conservative control of the Supreme Court and advance a White House effort to tilt the American judiciary more to the right.

The New York Times first reported the email.

Ford is willing to tell her story to the Judiciary Committee, whose senators will vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation - but only if agreement can be reached on what her attorney called "terms that are fair and which ensure her safety".
