She said the investigation would "ensure that the crucial facts and witnesses in this matter are assessed in a non-partisan manner, and that the Committee is fully informed before conducting any hearing or making any decisions".

Committee Democrats quickly backed up the letter.

Ms Ford has said she is willing to testify before senators but on Wednesday night it emerged she wanted the FBI to investigate her allegations before she appears in Congress.

Democrats complained that there was not a thorough FBI investigation of the allegations that took place, and no witnesses other than Hill and Thomas who were called.

Kavanaugh is now a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, widely viewed as the nation's second-most-powerful court.
