Kavanaugh's accuser wants Federal Bureau of Investigation probe before she testifies

Kavanaugh's accuser wants Federal Bureau of Investigation probe before she testifies

The letter, signed by 65 women who say they knew Kavanaugh in high school. insists that the judge "has behaved honorably and treated women with respect".

Debra Katz, the attorney for Ford, said on CBS that her client "will do whatever is necessary to make sure that the Senate Judiciary Committee has the full story and the full set of allegations to allow them to make a fully informed decision".

Ford's former high school is located seven miles away from Kavanaugh's former high school, and each of them are single-sex educational institutions. Ford told The Washington Post that Kavanaugh and his friend pushed her into a bedroom during a party and that Kavanaugh then forcibly pinned her down on a bed and tried to pull off her clothes.

This story will be updated.

"This nomination should not be treated differently simply because of an artificial deadline to rush the confirmation process", the letter states. "And I just think this committee, if he doesn't want to do it and they're going to go forward with a hearing, they need to subpoena him, let him say that and let some senators or someone cross-examine him".

The group released a letter Tuesday calling for a "thorough and independent investigation" before the Senate can vote on Kavanaugh's nomination.

He has won numerous awards for his outstanding work including several other Emmy Awards and six Directors Guild of America Awards.

The letter from the Holton-Arms alumnae stands opposite a similar one circulated by the Senate Judiciary Committee before Ford came forward.

"It kind of raises the question, do they want to come to the public hearing or not?" Earlier this year, she asked a top Immigration and Custom Enforcement official if he'd send his child to family detention centers if they were so much like "summer camps".

Both Kavanaugh and Judge have both vehemently denied Ford's allegations, which could derail Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination. He always conducted himself honorably with me at all times when we were together.

"This is a completely false allegation".

The development comes a day after Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Chuck Grassley announced plans for the hearing.

Ford initially declined to come forward.

Trump imposes tariffs on $200B more of Chinese goods
Trump has also complained about America's gaping trade deficit - $336 billion past year - with China, its biggest trading partner. The latest round of imports will face 10 percent tariffs through the end of the year, and then the rate will jump to 25 percent.

Democrats are demanding that the FBI be given time to reopen its background investigation into Kavanaugh so it can check the assertions of Christine Blasey Ford, the woman accusing Kavanaugh of assault.

If the Judiciary committee's timetable slips, it would become increasingly hard for Republicans to schedule a vote before midterm elections on November 6 elections, when congressional control will be at stake.

If the Federal Bureau of Investigation doesn't investigate the allegation, Feinstein said, "I think it should be delayed". Chuck Grassley on Tuesday said Ford has yet to respond to the invitation, even after being contacted by the staff several times over the course of roughly 36 hours.

"We've not heard from them", Grassley said on the "The Hugh Hewitt Show". Speaking to reporters on Monday, President Trump said, "if it takes a little delay, it'll take a little delay". Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who is on the committee, said she believes Ford is telling the truth, and emphasized that "the American public deserves to know the character of someone who will serve for his entire life on the highest court in our country".

"That's very puzzling to me", Collins said. "We are women who have known Brett Kavanaugh for more than 35 years and knew him while he attended high school between 1979 and 1983".

Republicans reversed course and agreed to the hearing in the face of growing demands by GOP senators to hear directly from the 53-year-old Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, now a psychology professor in California.
