Maezawa's moon flight is tentatively planned for 2023 aboard SpaceX's forthcoming Big Falcon Rocket spaceship, according to Reuters.

"Finally I can tell you that 'I choose to go to the moon, '" Maezawa said, echoing President John F. Kennedy's famous phrase.

Before he introduced Maezawa, Musk outlined his company's space travel goals, warning of a possible event that could "end civilization", adding, "We should take action and become a multi-planet civilization as soon as possible".

SpaceX is already making headlines around the world for its efforts to make spaceflight more affordable for organizations like NASA as well as private companies, but today the company will announce something truly revolutionary. Maezawa came to SpaceX with the idea for the group flight, Musk said.

NASA has launched a satellite created to precisely measure changes in Earth's ice sheets, glaciers, sea ice and vegetation. The mission is a successor to the original Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite that operated from 2003 to 2009.

In the proposed mission, scheduled for 2023, a BFR will launch and fly around the moon before returning to Earth, a flight lasting four to five days.

Musk makes much of sending people to the moon for the first time since the end of the Apollo programme on 1972. Twelve walked on the lunar surface.

Musk says the BFR will act more like a sky diver than an airplane.

SpaceX in February transfixed a global audience with the successful test launch of its Falcon Heavy, the most powerful operational rocket in the world.

The BFR will be constructed at a SpaceX facility in Los Angeles and is being created to handle everything from missions to Earth orbit to long-term cargo and crew missions to Mars.
