Revere man dies after shark attack off Cape Cod

A man who was swimming off the coast of MA has died after he was attacked by a shark, local officials say, making it the state's first fatal shark attack in more than 80 years.

He was spending time boogie boarding at the Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet with his girlfriend's brother when the shocking attack happened.

The man was given first aid and CPR, but died from his injuries at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. His name was released by Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Tara Miltimore.

"I was that guy on the beach screaming, 'Shark, shark", he said.

The two legislators thanked the Wellfleet Fire and Police departments, the town's beach staff and bystanders "whose preparation and quick action provided help as soon as possible". The man's friend had to drag him to shore.

"We are deeply saddened that a young man has died from an apparent shark bite today off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet", state Rep. Sarah Peake, D-Provincetown, and Sen.

Hayley Williamson, a Cape Cod resident and former lifeguard who was on the beach at the time, was left in disbelief. Many locals say it's the norm to swim fearlessly in the water because shark attacks are so rare.

The attack occurred on Saturday near Newcomb Hollow Beach on Cape Cod.
