Hundreds of people in North Carolina have been rescued from rising water.

There is around 156,068 people that have lost power and police have suspended their services in Morehead City and other coastal cities, warning any residents who remain in the evacuation zone that they will be without emergency services until the storm passes. "That's why we've been preaching to people that you have to get away from the water". "You may need to move up to the second story, or to your attic, but WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU".

Hurricane Florence has knocked out power for more than half a million people less than 24 hours after coming ashore in North Carolina.

The river swamped the town after Hurricane Matthew came through two years ago: One church parishioner drowned during that storm, more than 700 families were displaced from their homes, and two of the city's largest public housing projects were destroyed, Foreman said.

More ominously, forecasters said the onslaught on the coast would last for hours and hours because Florence had come nearly to a dead halt at just 3 mph (6 kph) as of midday.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper warned people: "Today the threat becomes a reality".

The Miami-based center had said earlier Friday Florence's arrival would come with "catastrophic" fresh water flooding over portions of the Carolinas.

The NHC described Florence as a "slow mover" and said it had the potential to dump historic amounts of rain on North and SC, as much as one metre in some places.

Forecasters said Florence's surge could cover all but a sliver of the Carolina coast under as much as 11 feet (3.4 meters) of sea water. "I was born and raised here and been through every storm the last 30 years, but this one seems to be doing more damage than we expected". More than 22,600 people were housed in 150 shelters statewide, including schools, churches and Wake Forest University's basketball arena. "We're going to have to have patience, we're going to have to be careful and we're going to have to deal with a lot of water".

About 10 million people could be affected by the storm and more than 1 million were ordered to evacuate the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia.

Little is known about their identity, and British police say they believe the names in their passports may be pseudonyms. The UK accused two men of attempting to assassinate a former Russian agent in England with military-grade nerve agent.

After coming ashore in North Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane, Florence was downgraded to a tropical storm Friday afternoon and trudged into SC as night came.

Forecasters said "catastrophic" freshwater flooding was expected along waterways far from the coast of North and SC.

On the morning of September 14, the National Hurricane Centre warned that "catastrophic" flooding and "life-threatening" storm surges were expected to spread inland.

Hurricane Florence dropped record-setting rain and was blamed for five deaths in North Carolina.

"I'm just trying to make myself feel at home", said Simone Brown, who has also been at the Palmetto Bays Elementary School shelter since Tuesday.
