U.S. troops from N. Korea remains to be identified soon

The U.S. military has identified the first two American troops from 55 boxes of human remains from the 1950-53 Korean War that North Korea handed over in July, the agency leading the analysis said on Monday.

"It's been good work done, they moved swiftly on a couple where they thought they had a better chance for a number of reasons, where the remains came from, and what background we had, and how much we had to work with", he said, according to CNN.

Reuters reported that remains from the two identified troops are believed to have been recovered from a battle near the Chongchon River.

Sampling for DNA analysis has been carried out so far on about half of the boxes of remains, they said.

The US has successfully identified two American service members from among the remains North Korea returned this July as part of the agreement signed by President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

After the US military informs family members, it plans to announce their names in the coming days, the officials said. One set was identified as a tall black American. Despite setbacks in the nuclear negotiations, North Korea has maintained its moratorium on weapons testing, has toned down its rhetoric, and attempted to downplay the threatening nature of its arsenal, as was evidenced by its decision not to feature ICBMs in its most recent military parade.

On Monday, the Pentagon said United Nations military officials met with North Korean counterparts last week to discuss the repatriation of additional remains.

But the Chinese government has long anxious about the potential for extremists or separatist groups to carry out similar attacks. The suspect is thought to have served several prison sentences for convictions including arson, drug trafficking and assault.
