Turkey says attacks on Syria's Idlib must stop, calls for ceasefire

Turkey's president warned of a humanitarian disaster if a Syrian government offensive on the rebel enclave of Idlib goes forward.

He warned that such an offensive would only "create further suffering, alienate and radicalize more Syrians" and "play into the hands of terrorists".

In an article in today's Wall Street Journal, he calls on the global community to take action, and warns that "the entire world stands to pay the price" otherwise.

On Sunday, government forces bombed the village of Hobeit in Idlib province, killing an infant girl and wounding several other civilians, the Syrian Civil Defence search-and-rescue group reported.

The Turkish leader called on a "comprehensive global counter-terrorism operation" and that the assistance of pro-Turkey rebels would be "crucial" in Idlib.

The UN has described it as a "dumping ground" for people evacuated and displaced from elsewhere in Syria during the seven-year war.

But Russia and Iran have rejected Turkey's call for a ceasefire.

The province is marbled with areas controlled by Islamists, moderate rebels and militants from Hayat Tahrir Al Sham HTS - an extremist group previously aligned with Al Qaeda.

A Syrian regime offensive on the opposition province of Idlib could lead to the 21st century's worst loss of life.

Turkey is concerned that HTS could seek to use civilians as human shields and prevent them from reaching Afrin.

Turkey's Sinirlioglu, whose country supports the Syrian opposition, countered that "only a viable cease-fire would allow the creation of an environment to effectively fight terrorism".

The Russian defence ministry, citing Idlib residents, said film crews from several Middle Eastern TV channels - as well as "a regional branch of a leading U.S. news channel" - had arrived for the shoot in the city of Jisr Al Shughur in Idlib.

"If the concern is the presence of terrorist groups, let's work together to eliminate them", Cavusoglu said at a news conference in Romania. The report said any military action would have to be approved by Chancellor Angela Merkel. "They still have the power to match their words of peace with deeds by working in Geneva to achieve a political transition in Syria".

Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock's comments in Geneva came days after Iran and Russian Federation backed a military campaign in the rebel-held area despite Turkey's pleas for a cease-fire.

Pointing to a USA missile strike on a Syrian air base in April 2017 after Assad's jets launched an alleged chemical attack in Idlib, Mattis noted that the Syrian leader had suffered massive losses to his air force.
