Amazon's Jeff Bezos to start $2 billion charitable fund

Amazon's Jeff Bezos to start $2 billion charitable fund

It will begin with the commitment of $2 billion and focus on two areas: funding existing non-profits that help homeless families, and creating a network of new, non-profit, tier-one preschools in low-income communities.

The second will launch a network of "high-quality, full-scholarship" preschools in low-income communities, which a Day One Fund organization will directly operate.

Amazon's main headquarters building in Seattle is also called Day 1.

Video shows Weinstein caressing woman before alleged rape
The frankly disturbing footage, shows Weinstein acting incredibly inappropriate, propositioning the woman, and caressing her. I worked in Wall Street before I went to business school, and I worked in an environment that was heavily male dominated...

Bezos's personal wealth has soared with the value of Amazon, whose stock price has doubled over the past year with its expansion into new sectors and geographies. "In the caption, he wrote, "September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month", he further wrote that Amazon employees around the globe will be wearing pjs to work to show their solidarity and support to children suffering from the deadly disease".

Bezos has yet to join "The Giving Pledge" created by fellow billionaires Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett, whose more than 180 signatories have promised to give more than half of their fortunes to philanthropy.

Mr Bezos - reportedly worth more than $164bn - has faced criticism for not doing more philanthropic work.

Bezos and his wife MacKenzie Bezos sit on the board of the Bezos Family Foundation, run by his parents. We will build an organization to directly operate these preschools.

Bezos made the announcement Thursday in a tweet and a post on his Instagram account.

In a tweet last June, Bezos asked the public for ideas about where he should give his money. It also comes as tech giants like Amazon face the threat of tougher regulations to protect consumer privacy and complaints from the Republican-controlled Congress and White House over alleged liberal bias influencing how their offerings are presented to consumers. The Seattle-based Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as the world's largest private nonprofit foundation has an endowment worth over $40 billion U.S. and has long supported homelessness services for families in the city.
