States Prepare for ‘Storm of a Lifetime’ as Hurricane Florence Looms

"In general, we're expecting see somewhere between 5-10" of rain from Florence.

The storm, packing winds of 110 mph, is just 235 miles off Wilmington Beach South Carolina and 280 miles off Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. "Does this mean we have much less to worry about?"

But the biggest danger could be life-threatening storm surges.

"The overall wind speeds may not be all that impressive at landfall, but the storm surge could be enormous", he said.

Forecasts project the center of Florence to make landfall around the South and North Carolina border on Friday as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane.

The hurricane is expected to weaken into a tropical depression as it continues westward into SC and Georgia.

"The farther north and west you are, the less risk you have", WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.

At 11 p.m., the storm was centered 1,075 km southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, moving at 28 kph.

The latest storm track shows Florence tracking farther south, and Fishel said that will lessen the storm's impacts in the Triangle.

Inland winds could lead to spotty power outages, but more extended outages lasting possibly for weeks are expected at the coast.

The hurricane center said Florence will approach the coast Friday and linger for a while before rolling ashore.

The waves are produced by being trapped along with incredibly strong winds moving in the same direction as the storm's motion.

Forecasters say those areas could be battered with hurricane conditions for at least 24 hours.

But what makes Florence so different from other storms this year?

If some of the computer projections hold, "it's going to come roaring up to the coast Thursday night and say, 'I'm not sure I really want to do this, and I'll just take a tour of the coast and decide where I want to go inland, '" said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the private Weather Underground forecasting service. In addition to tens of thousands of homes and businesses, five military bases and half a dozen nuclear power plants are also in the path of the storm. "While we can't attribute this hurricane exclusively to climate change, we do expect these types of intense hurricanes to happen more often as the world warms".

Its unclear exactly how many people fled, but more than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to clear out.

Almost 1000 prisoners in SC will not be moved from their cells, despite a mandatory evacuation order in the area.
