California Commits to 100% Clean Electricity by 2045

Brown hailed the move as another example of the state's global leadership on environmental initiatives as the Trump administration backs away from such policies.

"There is no understating the importance of this measure", Brown said at a signing ceremony in Sacramento surrounded by state lawmakers.

"And since climate change is [an] existential threat, I would say that doing what he's doing to undermine efforts that will save lives and prevent catastrophe for California, for America and the world, is about as reprehensible as any act that any American president has ever been guilty of".

"California is showing the world that a transition to 100 percent clean energy is within reach".

Communities could lose electricity for weeks, Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Brock Long said. Winds along the Carolina coast will reach tropical storm-force (39 miles per hour) early Thursday morning.

EZRA DAVID ROMERO, BYLINE: The law requires the state to gradually collect all its electricity from clean sources like hydropower, solar and wind. Others say the goal of 100 percent renewables is not realistic because wind and solar power are not always available. The order suggests achieving this by adding more zero emission vehicles to the state's roads and extending California's cap-and-trade program. "Transitioning to an entirely carbon-free energy grid will create good-paying jobs, ensure our children breathe cleaner air and mitigate the devastating impacts of climate change on our communities and economy". Natural gas, considered a "cleaner" fossil fuel, makes up 49 percent of the energy mix.

Opponents included major utilities, such as Pacific Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison, oil interests like the Western States Petroleum Association, and the California Farm Bureau Federation and California Chamber of Commerce. ESNA connects utilities, developers, energy users, policy makers and other key stakeholders from around the world to advance understanding and deployment of energy storage, and ultimately build a cleaner, more affordable and more resilient grid. "But it must be done", Brown said.

"Iceland and Norway meet essentially all of their electrical needs through hydro and geothermal power, and have for years - but those countries take advantage of extraordinary geology, making the accomplishment hard to replicate".

Approval of the bill comes in the wake of a report detailing the effects of climate change on California. Kevin de León, who sponsored the legislation.

"Today we're setting a marker that will be remembered by future generations", de Leon said.

California's governor and host Jerry Brown, whose crusade for clean energy started in the 1970s, set the tone by approving landmark legislation Monday that commits his state to purging Carbon dioxide from its electricity grid by 2045.

The executive order signed by Brown directs the state to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045 and net negative greenhouse gas emissions after that. California is the second state to pledge to make their energy carbon-free, the first being Hawaii. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, D-San Diego, left, who carried the bill in the Assembly, watches.
