P.E.I.'s Adam McQuaid traded by Bruins to Rangers

The Boston Bruins opened their main training camp Tuesday morning with a surprising announcement that they'd traded 11-year veteran defenseman Adam McQuaid to the New York Rangers for Steven Kampfer and two draft picks in 2019. A native of Charlottetown, PEI, McQuaid had a goal and three assists in 15:42 minutes a night.

McQuaid, 31, has played in 462 career games for the Bruins, dating back to the 2009-10 season.

Entering the upcoming season, Boston already had three right-handed defenseman in their starting lineup (Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo and Kevan Miller), which made it hard to envision McQuaid seeing much playing time. The Bruins won the Stanley Cup that season.

Hurricane Florence: 'Big and vicious' storm closes in on Carolinas
Hurricane Florence is the biggest concern to the U.S. , as it will likely impact the Carolinas between Wednesday and Friday. Afterward, a track through the Caribbean is forecast, though unfavorable conditions may start to weaken the storm.

Kampfer, who spent the first year and a half of his career in Boston from 2010-12, will likely occupy the same place on the depth chart (or perhaps be even lower), but he comes with the flexibility of a two-way contract that allows him to be sent down to Providence without having his salary count against the cap.

Kampfer, 29, has skated in 166 career National Hockey League games, including one previous stint with the Bruins in 2010-11, during which he helped the team win the Stanley Cup.
