Leahy says Kavanaugh was 'not truthful' about Democratic documents

The makeup of support and opposition to Kavanaugh's confirmation in the Senate appears to have held relatively steady throughout the marathon testimony.

The United States Supreme Court is, by design, a profoundly antidemocratic institution, and as Republicans get ready to ram Brett Kavanaugh's nomination through the Senate, it's worth pointing out that it doesn't have to be this way.

"And I thought that was not a quite accurate description of all legal scholars because it referred to all".

Kavanaugh, whose hearings were swarmed with protesters from various activist groups opposed to his nomination, revealed a trove of information about himself, while concealing just as much.

"If you folks are wondering why we're talking about Kavanaugh all the time, if somebody came here to talk about tariffs, somebody came here to talk about budgets, somebody came here to talk about something else, raise your hand", he said. We had a good conversation about how he would be on the Supreme Court.

At least 22 people were aboard the flight from the capital Juba's worldwide airport to the city of Yirol when it crashed. Radio Miraya posted a picture on its Twitter account of the twisted wreckage of the plane submerged in water.

During his confirmation hearing, Kavanaugh was seen as evasive on the question of whether he would support a reversal of Roe v Wade, the 1973 ruling protecting abortion rights.

Bennet said he's "discouraged" by Republicans' refusal to release documents from Kavanaugh's past, including from his time working as a top White House aide in the George W. Bush presidential administration. One email warned Kavanaugh not to distribute the material.

"I am not sure that all legal scholars refer to Roe as the settled law of the land at the Supreme Court level since Court can always overrule its precedent, and three current Justices on the Court would do so", Kavanaugh wrote in the email.

Abortion advocates and Senate Democrats, however, weren't convinced by Kavanaugh's testimony, in which he also falsely described birth control pills as "abortion-inducing drugs". That's not true, legal scholars say.

"I am right now, before your process is finished, I am going to release the email about racial profiling, and I understand the penalty comes with potential ousting from the Senate", the New Jersey Democrat said, later adding that he was "knowingly violating the rules". "And that's an important precedent to the Supreme Court". One of those people I will be running against in two and a half years, I will be running against them and I look so forward to it because we'll be able to give it back.

Refusing to cooperate with the ICC because you think it sets a bad precedent for national sovereignty is one thing. Bush's Democratic successor, Barack Obama, took some steps to cooperate with it.

There were "a lot of antics in the audience and some passion from various members of the Judiciary Committee but he kept his cool", McConnell added. "So that seemed to fit common use and not be a risky and unusual weapon".

Later, Feinstein's office tweeted it was skeptical about Kavanaugh's response.

Graham pressed the issue, and Kavanaugh responded that the Supreme Court applied the liberty clause in its decisions regarding abortion: "The Supreme Court has found it under the liberty clause but you're right".

"All they have to do is line up their votes and we can't stop them".
