Hurricane Florence's path: Track the storm here

It warned the storm would be "an extremely risky major hurricane" by the time it made landfall, forecast in the Carolinas on Thursday. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center.

As of Monday evening, Hurricane Florence was moving west-northwest at 13 miles per hour.

Around one million people have been ordered to evacuate from the SC coast as the state and neighboring North Carolina brace for a hit from Hurricane Florence, the most powerful storm to take aim at the USA mainland this year.

The Navy said all ships in Virginia's coastal Hampton Roads area were preparing to leave port for open seas.

Large swells are already affecting Bermuda and parts of the U.S. East Coast, according to the NHC.

Forecasters are also tracking two more hurricanes that have formed to the east of Florence: Hurricane Helene, which strengthened to a Category 2 storm off the west coast of Africa today, and Hurricane Isaac, a Category 1 storm now located roughly halfway between Florence and Helene.

North Carolina officials on Monday ordered residents to evacuate the state's Outer Banks barrier islands beginning on Monday ahead of Hurricane Florence, the first major hurricane to threaten the eastern United States this year.

Currently Florence is forecast to remain a tropical storm for the next day or so, after which steady intensification back to hurricane Florence is anticipated.

Meanwhile, the two other tropical storms in the Atlantic - Florence and Helen - are expected to become hurricanes today.

"Florence is expected to be an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday (Sept. 13)", said officials. A high-pressure ridge building to the north and northwest of Florence is expected to steer the hurricane west-north-westward to northwestward toward the southeastern USA coast.

As of 11 a.m., Florence was centered about 580 miles south-southeast of Bermuda, moving west at 13 mph. It would also mean a "massive rain event" from as far north as Virginia all the way down to SC.

Lining up behind Florence, Isaac was about 1,150 miles (1,855 kilometers) east of the Windward Islands with top winds of 75 mph (120 kph) early Monday, moving west at 14 mph (22 kph).

The 2018 hurricane season lasts until November 30.

Florence is expected to become a major hurricane Monday morning and "remain an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday, " the hurricane center said in its 5 a.m. advisory.

State of Emergency has been declared by North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Heavy rain could cause severe flooding throughout the region.

Florence is now a category 4 hurricane.
