Djokovic beats Del Potro to win US Open

The disappointment on Sunday belonged to a teary Del Potro who was back in a Grand Slam final for the first time since the big Argentine won his one and only title at Flushing Meadows in 2009.

With the win on Sunday, Djokovic has extended his head-to-head record against Del Potro to 15-4 as the Argentine was unable to upstage the Serb.

Djokovic dominated the first set in front of the 20,000-plus crowd inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium but the crux of the match came midway through the second.

Novak Djokovic kept getting the ball back, so del Potro would take a bigger whack, trying to find some spot in the corner of the court that would be uncovered.

Juan Martin del Potro believes Novak Djokovic can end his career as the most successful Grand Slam title victor, surpassing Roger Federer's current mark of 20.

"I dug deep at that time to move forward and get into the position I am now", he continued.

The WTA is calling for fair treatment of women's players and coaching to be allowed across tennis in the aftermath of the U.S. Open women's final.

Juan Martín del Potro brought his own cheering section to the US Open, but in truth, the "gentle giant" from Argentina has the backing of the entire tennis world.

"If you told me in February this year when I got the surgery that I'll win Wimbledon, US Open, and Cincinnati, it would be hard to believe", he said. I really am, ' Djokovic said.

Britain's Alison Hughes, the second woman to umpire a U.S. Open men's singles final, kept a low profile as the two former champions went to work.

Del Potro put up as strong as a fight as you'll see in a straight-set win, but it was Djokovic's day.

Del Potro was looking at having to become the first man since Pancho Gonzales in 1949 to win the USA title from two sets down. Now he has backed that up at the US Open, marking the fourth time in his career that he has won multiple majors in a season.

"I just feel like, as Serena said in the closing ceremony, Osaka deserves to have her moment. I don't know", she said.

Add in the trophies he has earned at six Australian Opens, one French Open and four Wimbledons, most recently in July, and the 31-year-old Serb pulled even with Pete Sampras for the third-most majors among men, trailing only Roger Federer's 20 and Rafael Nadal's 17.

But while Djokovic took to public transport, brushed up on his history and joined in with a famous "floss" dance with some local children outside in the rain, women's champion Naomi Osaka showed off her maiden slam title inside a TV studio.

From 1-3, Del Potro won three games in a row and had Djokovic rattled. "I'm sad because I lose but I'm happy for Novak".

Djokovic particularly struggles in the hot and humid conditions that hit NY over much of the fortnight and looked out of sorts against Marton Fucsovics in the first round - splitting the first two sets, he trailed 4-2 in the third - Joao Sousa in the fourth and giant killer John Millman in the quarterfinals.
