Florence expected to intensify quickly Sunday

But the shear is abating and the storm is approaching warmer waters - conditions that could allow Florence to become a hurricane again on Sunday and a major hurricane - meaning a Category 3 storm or greater - by Monday, the National Hurricane Center said.

If Florence rides the coast, it would be a huge blow to the Outer Banks but less of an impact on us.

It remains too soon to determine the location and magnitude of impacts from Florence.

Tropical Storm Florence is predicted to regain hurricane strength today but Bermuda should be spared severe winds.

Adm. Christopher Grady said in a statement that the decision was based on Florence's current track, which indicates the area could see strong sustained winds and storm surges.

Hurricane Florence could pose East Coast threat
But Southeastern North Carolina officials say now is the time to make sure your hurricane plan and supplies are up to date. The centre is keeping an eye on the system, along with two other disturbances developing off the coast of Africa.

This could become an extremely risky situation for folks in those areas, who should monitor the progress of this storm closely.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has declared a state of emergency, in anticipation of the storm.

"We are now in the peak of hurricane season - disaster preparedness should be a major priority for your family", Florida Governor Rick Scott wrote on Twitter.

Governors in Virginia, North Carolina and SC all declared states of emergency over the past two days in anticipation of the hurricane.

The truth is Florence still has a long ways to go, hundreds and thousands of miles to travel and it is simply too early to forecast with any certainty a likely landfall area. It is gaining organization and is expected to become a hurricane in the next day or so.

So it's not surprising that at least one spectator in the hearing room wore a T-shirt that proclaimed "Women for Kavanaugh". The Senate Judiciary Committee has concluded its hearing on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Computer models are now honing in on a close approach or direct hit on the East Coast, though the exact point of landfall is still unclear.

"There's the potential for this to be a full-state event, not just a coastal event", S.C. Emergency Management Division Director Kim Stenson said Saturday.

The storm could cause unsafe surf and rip currents along parts of the USA east coast across the weekend as it swirls across the Atlantic, followed by tropical depression Nine. Tropical-storm warnings have been issued for the southern Cabo Verde Islands. It was more than 1,700 miles from the eastern-most Caribbean islands early Saturday.
