Senate concludes Kavanaugh hearing; Supreme Court confirmation likely

Democratic Senator Cory Booker focused on an email he said described Kavanaugh's views as a Bush White House aide on the use of "racial profiling" in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States by the al Qaeda Islamist militant group. Committee members Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kamala Harris of California are among the Democrats considered possible candidates in the next presidential campaign.

With Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election ongoing, Democrats have spent part of Kavanaugh's hearing trying to get his views on presidential power, including whether a president can be forced to testify in a criminal investigation or pardon himself.

Pointing at Kavanaugh's table, she patronized, "So they're not in that book that you carry".

In response to the outcry, some previously confidential documents were made public Thursday, including a chain where Kavanaugh and his friends were planning a male-bonding trip on a boat from September 7-9, 2001.

Booker had dramatically said he would "knowingly" violate Senate rules to release emails marked "committee confidential" that showed Kavanaugh discussing racial profiling as a White House lawyer in 2002.

Mr. Booker quoted from the emails during his questioning of the judge.

Kavanaugh wrote in another email from 2001 that some U.S. Transportation Department affirmative action regulations used "a lot of legalisms and disguises to mask what is a naked racial set-aside".

Booker was the reprimanded by other Senators for citing a confidential document that Kavanaugh was prevented from seeing, which caused Booker confusion as to the reason why. In response, Booker joked that he was having "a Spartacus moment".

Kavanaugh completed two days of lengthy questioning by senators on Thursday night, keeping his composure under intense questioning by Democrats and avoiding any stumbles that could have tripped up his confirmation. John Cornyn, his Republican counterpart, responded with a dig at Booker, saying that "running for president is no excuse" for leaking information.

Senators on the Judiciary Committee are likely to vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation on September 20 with a vote by the full Senate the following week. But if senators from either side of the aisle were aware of that at the outset of the hearing, they didn't let on.

"For so long, I feel like the enemy had been making such progress", said Sheets.

Harris, meanwhile, even before she garnered attention on social media for her cross-examination of Kavanaugh Wednesday night, was already taking advantage of the desire of the Democratic base to try to block Kavanaugh. "Because if judges were to rediscover these principles, then the Supreme Court would not be as powerful as it is today, and out nation would be less divisive", Lee wrote.

The committee's hearings this week have been high on spectacle and, arguably, low on substance.

Amid multiple ambiguous statements on abortion, same-sex "marriage" is the next issue on which Brett Kavanaugh's testimony to become the next Supreme Court Justice raised more questions than answers Thursday.

Democrats are charging that Kavanaugh lied about whether - while working for the Bush administration in 2003 - he handled the "vetting process" for another judge, appeals court Judge William Pryor. There's little we know now about Kavanaugh that we didn't at the start of the week.
