'Rat Fever' Cases Rise After Kerala Floods,12 Dead Since August 1

After getting the relief from floods and heavy rainfall in Kerala, now a new problem has occurred in the state i.e. Rat fever.

A rat fever or leptospirosis alert has been issued for the three districts. Fifteen other deaths were reported over the past few days, which have been classified as "suspected rat fever".

Leptospirosis is a bacterial illness transmitted mainly through water or soil irascible by the urine of contaminated animals.Equally, the yell saw 1,617 cases of rooster pox with one death in August, in opposition to zero cases in all of 2017. They have been identified as Ranju from Ranni in Idukki and Anil Kumar from Kozhikode.

Kerala, which has 44 rivers, witnessed its worst floods in 1924 following torrential rains. Once they get infected, their urine carries the bacteria.

Additional Chief Secretary Rajeev Sadanand had also told TNM earlier that a number of cases coming in now were likely to be due to the fact that many people had not taken the precautionary measures and urged for those who had not yet taken doxycycline to do so.

"We can control this if everyone follow the instructions of the health department".

The separate death toll from the monsoon floods that forced more than a million people from their homes in Kerala last month has meanwhile risen to 486, the government said.

The five districts are Kozhikode, Palakkad, Thrissur, Malappuram and Ernakulam, from where most of the suspected cases were reported. "Despite several advisories, people are not listening and taking preventive medicines as advised", she said.

A health ministry spokesman said as of Sunday there had been almost 200 confirmed cases of what is locally called rat fever - the waterborne disease leptospirosis transmitted via the urine of infected animals, with symptoms including muscle pain and fever.

The outbreak of disease following the devastating floods is causing concern, despite the government announcing it will seek to borrow more than 100bn Indian rupees ($1.4bn) to finance reconstruction work.
