Exxon evacuates Mobile Bay facilities in Gulf ahead of Storm Gordon

Tropical storm and storm surge warnings were in effect along a long stretch of the central Gulf Coast from Morgan City, Louisiana, including Lake Pontchartrain, to the Alabama-Florida border.

The Escambia County Sheriff's office posted on its Facebook page late Tuesday that deputies responded to a call that a tree had fallen on a mobile home in Pensacola.

A state of emergency has been declared in Alabama, Louisiana and MS as Tropical Storm Gordon heads for America's Gulf Coast.

New Orleans isn't expected to take the brunt of the storm, but "we're expecting heavy rains and some loss of electricity", he said.

Rain was still falling but the lights were on at a Waffle House restaurant in Mobile, where factory worker Jerome Richardson said he lost power at 9 p.m.as the storm passed overhead.

"We don't want to go through what we went through before", O'Neal says.

In coastal Mississippi's Jackson County, people filled bags with sand at government distribution points, intending to line their homes with them to avert flooding.

Tropical Storm Gordon slammed into the eastern Gulf Coast on Wednesday, flooding roads and causing minor damage to some homes, but the storm missed Louisiana and most of the MS coast nearly entirely, and never became a hurricane.

Flooding also was a risk.

The Lawrence area could see more rain this week as Tropical Storm Gordon hits land in Alabama and moves into the Midwest.

Early Tuesday, Gordon was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour - short of the 74-mph threshold for a hurricane. This would have made Gordon the first hurricane to strike the continental United States this year.

The NHC advisory warned that winds up 70mph can be witnessed as Gordon makes the landfall west of Alabama-Mississippi border.

Governors in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana all declared states of emergency, allowing them to mobilize state resources and National Guard troops to help during and after the storm.

People in the Gulf Coast are dealing with heavy flooding from Tropical Storm Gordon.

Gordon formed into a tropical storm near the Florida Keys early Monday, lashing the southern part of the state with heavy rains and high winds before moving into the Gulf of Mexico.

Boaters are evacuating to safe harbors, and motorists are fleeing barrier islands as the Gulf Coast hustles to get ready for the storm.
