His death came just one day after McCain's family announced he was discontinuing medical treatment following a heroic battle with glioblastoma, a form of very aggressive brain cancer. During his final years in the Senate, McCain was perhaps the loudest advocate for United States military involvement in Iraq, Syria, Libya and more.

Democrat Bill Clinton hailed McCain for having "frequently put partisanship aside", while his former vice president Al Gore said he always admired how the senator "would work to find common ground, no matter how hard".

In a joint statement, the former USA leader and ex-secretary of state said: "Senator John McCain believed that every citizen has a responsibility to make something of the freedoms given by our constitution, and from his heroic service in the navy to his 35 years in Congress, he lived by his creed every day".

And former President Barack Obama tweeted a touching statement from him and Michelle. Additionally, his courage, perseverance and ability to overcome adversity, in every facet of his life, will continue to inspire us all.

McCain was the first sitting senator to ever host SNL, and while he played himself (and other politicians, like then-Attorney General John Ashcroft) in several sketches, he also fully committed to some sheer nonsense - with hilarious results. John McCain, who died Saturday at the age of 81.
