Pilot crashes plane into own home 'after fight'

Youd and his wife bought the house, valued at almost US$400,000, in 2016 in a quiet subdivision of new homes near the foothills, county property records show. That occurred without incident, Sandoval said.

Hours later, at 12:30 a.m., Youd called and asked a patrol officer be present at his house to "keep the peace" as he picked up belongings and his truck, officials said.

A video from KUTV2 reporter Brónagh Tumulty shows Youd's house on fire the same night of the crash.

The plane took off from a Utah airport before crashing, police said.

Duane Youd, from Utah, is believed to have stolen the propeller plane from his employer before embarking on an apparent suicide mission to kill his partner.

Youd was arrested Sunday after witnesses saw him assault his wife, Sandoval said.

Duane Youd flew the Cessna 525 into his house in the town of Payson early yesterday morning. The next thing police knew, the man had crashed a plane into his home after taking off from Spanish Fork Airport.

The plane belonged to a company for which Youd flew, the sergeant said, and the motive remained uncertain. They survived, and managed to escape not only the crash, but the huge fireball left behind.

Dodging power lines and other houses, Youd plowed the plane into the front of his house at 2.30 am.

Photos of the wreckage showed the white plane charred and in pieces in the front yard nearby an overturned and crushed vehicle.
