Tourists evacuated as flash floods hit south of France

About 750 people in all were evacuated in Gard, mainly from campsites, a top district official, Thierry Dousset, told France's BFM-TV news channel.

Ms Buchanan was left with a "frightening" drive through floodwaters that had hit a site near a river in the neighbouring Ardeche region.

Hardest hit was the Gard region, where 119 children, many of them from Germany, were evacuated from their campsite at Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said in a statement.

A 70-year-old German man helping to supervise children at a summer camp at Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas in Gard was feared to have been swept away by floodwaters along with his van.

Bayern, under new coach Niko Kovac, will head back to their training camp in Tegernsee ahead of next weekend's German Super Cup against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Torrential rains Wednesday caused the heavy flooding in the Gard region.

The missing German was supervising the children at the camp.

He was sheltering inside the caravan - said by police to have later been found "empty and in pieces" - after being trapped by muddy, fast-flowing water after the Ardeche river burst its banks.

Four German citizens were also taken to hospital for hypothermia.

'The level and speed of the river today was extraordinary - we woke up in about a foot of water, ' she told the BBC.

More than 400 firefighters and gendarmes, many sent in from other regions, helped in the evacuations, using helicopters to spot camp sites and to perform rescues.

About 17,000 homes in southwest and northeast France were without power and several roads were closed as a result of the floods.

It's been advised that locals give time for flood waters to recede, and keep an eye on local weather reports before they travel.
