US Senator Rand Paul Invites Russian Lawmakers to Washington

Senator Rand Paul is leading a USA delegation to Moscow in an effort to improve lines of communication with Russian Federation.

Paul said that members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the upper house of the Russian parliament, the Federation Council, had been invited "to come to the United States to meet with us in Washington".

In a statement released by his office, Paul emphasized that "engagement is vital to our national security and peace around the world". "I consider this to be very important." said Paul, after meeting with Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of Russia's foreign affairs committee.

The senator announced his planned trip just hours after President Trump concluded a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where Trump cast doubt on the USA intelligence community's conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 election.

It's unclear when those Russian lawmakers plan to visit the U.S. Capitol.

After meeting with Paul for an hour, Kosachev publicly reiterated that Russian Federation was not involved in election meddling.

Paul led a small delegation of Americans in a meeting at the Federation Council, Russia's equivalent of the U.S. Senate, with senators from the global relations committee.

The senator, once a foe of the president, has emerged as a unique and somewhat renegade voice, coming as both Republicans and Democrats criticize Trump for not taking a tougher stance against Russian Federation. Trump later walked back the remark and said he trusted the US intelligence community's assessment Moscow did interfere.

He also avoided answering a question about Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Paul has nurtured a close relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump and defended Trump after the president's Helsinki summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month.

"The hatred of the president is so intense that partisans would rather risk war than give diplomacy a chance", Paul said in a long defense of Trump on the Senate floor, days after the summit.

Mr. Paul's press released noted that nuclear proliferation and terrorism will be among the issues the global leaders discuss.
