ND West Nile virus cases more than triple in a week

It has been reported to the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit that mosquitoes collected from three traps last week in the Dresden, Blenheim and North West Chatham areas have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Only about 20 percent of those who come in contact with West Nile virus exhibit any symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

One round of larvicide has been applied to roadside catch basins in Stratford, St. Marys, Listowel and Mitchell to help reduce mosquito breeding.

Public Health officials say West Nile Virus is mainly transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito.

The mosquitos get the virus by feeding on infected birds. The most common symptoms of the virus are fever, headaches or physical weakness. People older than 50 are most at risk for WNV infection as are those with weakened immune systems.
