New U.S. sanctions against Iran take effect

US President Donald Trump has warned other countries against doing business with Tehran, saying he had imposed "the most biting" sanctions on the country.

President Trump reimposed sanctions targeting Iranian purchases of U.S. dollars, metals trading, coal, industrial software and its auto sector.

"We are determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran", European officials said in a statement on Monday.

Trump said he was open to reaching a more comprehensive deal with Iran "that addresses the full range of the regime´s malign activities, including its ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism".

Iran is accusing the USA of reneging on the nuclear agreement, signed by the Obama administration, and of causing recent Iranian economic unrest.

"Most of the companies have already made up their mind, whether it's the German Siemens, the French carmaker PSA, the Danish Maersk - all these companies that have said they don't want to risk losing access to the United States market, they don't want to risk losing access to the financing in dollars by U.S. banks, and also they don't want to lose their USA shareholders". U.S. imports of food and carpets from Iran are also restricted.

"Today, the entire world has declared they are not in line with United States policies against Iran", Zarif said in a speech, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

Other countries have also asked European Union officials for details on the blocking regulations, as they explore ways to bypass sanctions.

"We are doing our best to keep Iran in the deal, to keep Iran benefitting from the economic benefits that the agreement brings to the people of Iran, because we believe that this is (in) the security interests not only of our region but also of the world. That's the ask", said Pompeo on Sunday ahead of the re-imposition.

The US has long designated Iran as the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism, Pompeo noted Sunday, adding that the Islamic Republic can not expect to be treated as an equal in the worldwide community until it halts such activities.

Daimler (DDAIF) said in a statement that Iran's automotive markets have been significantly weaker than expected, and it had not yet resumed production or sale of Mercedes cars or trucks in the country. The International Atomic Energy Agency, which is monitoring the implementation of the deal, has said in 11 consecutive reports that Iran is in compliance and that the agreement has allowed for greater verification of Iran's nuclear activities.
