Mateo Kovacic 'nearing Chelsea loan move'

Mateo Kovacic 'nearing Chelsea loan move'

With speculation over the future of Thibaut Courtois, Willian and Eden Hazard, Chelsea's concerns were compounded on Sunday with a Community Shield defeat to Manchester City.

A move may be confirmed imminently, but if one club should be looking to hijack the move, it's Tottenham Hotspur - just as Chelsea did to them with Willian in 2013.

According to Spanish publication Marca, Croatia worldwide Mateo Kovacic is close to agreeing to terms with the Blues, which will see him move to Stamford Bridge on a season-long loan.

That's left Chelsea in pole position to sign the former Inter star and Marca, via TeamTalk, claim that a deal has now been agreed with Madrid and the player for Kovacic to join the Blues on an initial season-long loan deal.

The agreement between the clubs will be announced in the next few hours and Kovacic will soon depart for London to embark on his new adventure.

However, newly-appointed Madrid boss Lopetegui has echoed the words of Perez and dismissed any talk of losing Modric.

Lopetegui insists that Kovacic has trained as usual and he, alongside compatriot Luka Modric, will enjoy playing at the Bernabeu this season.

"I've not seen that Kovacic gone on strike", Lopetegui added.

But according to Marca, Madrid have now given up with their efforts to keep Kovacic and the Croatia global is now on the verge of joining Chelsea on loan for the new season.
