Parasite risk in salads and wraps sold at Kroger, Walgreens, Trader Joe's

The problem was discovered when Caito Foods received notification from its lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, that the chopped romaine that is used to manufacture some of their salads and wraps was being recalled.

The products were produced between July 15 to 18 and have "Best By", "Enjoy by", "Best if Sold By" or "Sell By" dates ranging from July 18 through July 23, 2018. This time, the unfortunate honor has fallen on Walgreens, Kroger, and Trader Joe's, which have been forced to recall salads and wraps possibly contaminated with the cyclospora parasite.

Federal officials are warning consumers to throw away or return over two dozen varieties of salads and wraps sold at major grocery store chains because of concerns about parasitic contamination.

Transmitted in foods tainted by fecal matter, cyclospora can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, body aches and fever a week or more after someone consumes food or liquid contaminated with the parasite. The lettuce was supplied by Fresh Express.

The agency is telling people to be extra cautious with beef pork and poultry salad and wrap products out of Caito Foods LLC, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The outer limit of the incubation period for this batch of food is August 6, the USDA said, and it could be up to six weeks before officials begin to receive reports of illness.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service notes the incubation period for cyclospora is up to two weeks, which will last until August 6. Cyclosporiasis can be treated with antibiotics. The products will also include the establishment number "EST".

This is the second such incident in as many months for the central in food distributor.
