Google sets down ground rules for notch support on Android P

Currently, apps tend to ignore the notch area on smartphones as far as the matter on display is concerned, which means that potentially useful data could be on screen, but simply hidden under the notch.

Since the release of Apple's iPhone X previous year, there has been a steady influx of phones with notches from many companies, including Nokia, OPPO, OnePlus, and Leagoo.

But although it's accepted the notch, it's now set ground rules for Android P to prevent bad experiences for users.

While the majority of the blog post aims to help developers make their apps compatible with notched phone designs, Google briefly mentions a few restrictions Android P will place on device makers themselves.

Among the other notch-related requirements that are spelled out so that devices with notches don't negatively affect the way apps run, the status bar has to extend to at least the height of the notch in portrait mode.
