Bacteria in dog saliva causes Wisconsin man to lose both legs

A Wisconsin man needed several amputations after he contracted a blood infection after being licked by a dog, WITI-TV reported.

Greg Manteufel thought he had the flu and went to the hospital last month - only to find out that his body was being ravaged by Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a type of bacteria found in the saliva of dogs and cats.

"He kept saying to the doctors here", said wife Dawn Manteufel, "take what you need and keep me alive".

Doctors pumped him with antibiotics to stop the infection, his wife said, but clots blocked the flow of blood to his extremities, causing tissue and muscles to die.

In late June, blood tests revealed Greg Manteufel had infection caused by the bacteria capnocytophaga. The bacteria dramatically slows down the body's blood circulation and decreases blood pressure. "Surprisingly enough, they did do it", Dawn Manteufel said.

Dawn says what happened to her husband was a fluke.

Dawn told the Post that about the time of her husband's illness he had been around eight dogs, and that any one of them could have licked him. If you would like to donate to Manteufel medical care, you can do so through the families GoFundMe page. Anyone bitten by a dog is urged to seek medical attention immediately even if they feel fine.

Capnocytophaga is a normal bacteria present in the mouths of 60 per cent of dogs and 17 per cent of cats. "Within days of being admitted to the hospital while still fighting for his life, Greg first lost both feet, after a second surgery to remove more damage on legs, they amputated thru both Knee caps". As the damage grew more severe, he had to have both of his legs amputated above his kneecaps.

Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Silvia Munoz-Price stated this was a very rare case. Manteufel also spent his entire life around dogs, which makes the blood infection all the more surprising.

People with weakened immune symptoms are at greater risk for becoming ill, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These infections are more likely in people over 40 who have an immuno-compromised condition, or in people who excessively use alcohol or who have had their spleen removed, according to the CDC.

Jason Marchand, the page's creator, said: "Greg has held his head high and is taking all the news like a beast".
