Swedish Crown Jewels Stolen By Thieves Who Got Away on a Motorboat

The police have issued vague descriptions of the thieves: one is said to be skinny and wearing a light beige jacket with dark long trousers.

Local news channel Aftonbladet reported the thieves stole two crowns and an orb, adorned with gold, precious stones and pearls that come from the funeral regalia of Charles IX and Kristina the Elder, dating back to the early 1600s.

In 2013, 16th-century copies of King Johan III's crown, orb and scepter were stolen from the cathedral in the central Swedish city of Vasteras, 100 kilometers (60 miles) west of the capital Stockholm, during a nighttime burglary.

It said: "The police's work has continued during the night but it has not resulted in any significant successes in the form of suspected persons or detention".

The thieves snatched the priceless crown jewels and fled in a motorboat that was moored just below the cathedral, which is located near waters that flow into Lake Malar.

Police immediately began to search for the thieves by boat and in helicopters but were unable to capture them.

Maria Ellior of the Swedish police's National Operations Department told TT the items are "impossible to sell".

The van splashing video also caught the eye of Ottawa Police, who were looking into the matter themselves. Gatien thanked the Ottawa division of Black & McDonald for its "quick and decisive action" in the case.


He added: "We contacted the police and they told us they had taken something from the cathedral".

Similar heists have occurred before.

It was recovered several days later in a garbage bag left on a a countryside road, following an anonymous tip. Authorities said no one was hurt in the robbery, but didn't provide further details.
