Longest total lunar eclipse concludes Friday night

Where can you see the blood moon in July 2018?

The total eclipse will last up to 2h 43m IST on 28 July.

The eclipse will be visible in the regions covering Australia, Asia, Russia - except the northern part, Africa, Europe, east of South America and Antarctica.

Meanwhile, Mars is now traveling closer to Earth than it has since 2003, so some observers overnight might have also seen what looked like an orange-red star, but was in fact the red planet.

It coincided not only with Mars's close approach, but with what he described as a "procession of planets" - a line-up of our celestial neighbours that gave skywatchers a particularly good view of Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars.

The professor, however, said that the next total lunar eclipse that would be visible in Nigeria would occur on January 21, 2019.

The total eclipse will last 1 hour, 42 minutes and 57 seconds, though a partial eclipse precedes and follows, meaning the moon will spend a total of 3 hours and 54 minutes in the earth's umbral shadow, according to Nasa.

The next lunar eclipse of such length will happen in 2123. Some light, though, still reaches it because it is bent by the earth's atmosphere. Stargazers will enjoy a rare celestial display when, on the same night, Mars will shine brighter than it has in 15 years.

"Less dark eclipses may show the moon as dark gray or brown... as rust-colored, brick-red, or, if very bright, copper-red or orange".

Unlike a solar eclipse, which can be viewed only from a certain relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of Earth.

Lunar eclipse begins when the Moon begins to pass into Earth's shadow, gradually growing dimmer. The Moon won't even rise in our eastern skies until 9:06 PM, almost 4 hours after completely emerging from Earth's shadow.

Basically, this particular blood moon is not the one for you if you're an American who will be in America on Friday.

The eclipse won't be visible to viewers in North America, except via webcasts.

The moon will also be at the farthest point on its orbit from Earth, making its movement across the sky slower from our perspective, thus spending longer in the dark, according to AFP.
