Date, timings and how to watch the blood moon

A total eclipse will start at 1:00 am (July 28).

Moonrise in the United Kingdom will be at around 8.50pm.

By 5.30am (AEST) the eclipse entered into its "total" phase, plunging the moon in darkness, which soon became a coppery crimson disc.

The rising full moon will also change from shining silver to deep blood-red during the eclipse.

But the eclipse won't be visible to those in North America.

Below is an interview with Daniel Cunnama, of the South African Astronomical Observatory about tonight's astronomical event.

The month of July is going to offer a good spectacle in the night sky.

The protests also demand a "right of return" for descendants of Palestinian refugees to ancestral homes in what is now Israel. Some 300 Palestinians - majority assailants, Israel says - have also been killed in that period, according to news agencies.

The totality of this lunar eclipse will last about an hour and 43 minutes, but a partial eclipse before and after the total phase means the moon will spend almost four hours crossing the Earth's shadow. But that's not all.

While Mars is visible in the night sky nearly all year round, it can get extremely bright every few years.

In Delhi, the Nehru Planetarium will organise a "moon carnival" tonight. Why is it such a big deal?

The Moon will be completely covered by the Earth's umbra for 103 minutes, making this eclipse the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century. It's one in the lifetime event when the Moon will turn blood red at nearly an hour past midnight on July 27 or early morning July 28. On average, the totality lasts approximately one hour to one hour and 30 minutes during moon eclipse. The partial eclipse will start again around 3:49 am. That's due to last for 1 hour and 22 minutes.

It's unclear which areas will be able to see it and for how long it will be visible.

In addition, the event will also be visible in parts of South-America, parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia.

More likely, though, market buzzards are holding off because of how quickly some analysts are turning on the company. If this holds by end of trading on Thursday, Zuckerberg will slip three places down Bloomberg's billionaire index .

Mars will more likely appear as a very bright star.

Whether a full moon turns coppery red depends entirely on the atmospheric conditions and how much dust is in the air to bounce off the light from the sun.

The Mahila Seva Samaj School, in association with Aryabhata Planetarium, will be setting up a high-end telescope in the playground to view the spectacular blood moon.

Across the world, from the Taj Mahal to the Eiffel Tower, people will be turning their eyes to the sky, hoping to see the blood moon, which appears orange, brown or crimson as sunlight is bent through the earth's atmosphere. "The rim of the earth would be glowing because light is being scattered by the earth's atmosphere".

Mr Kirkley said that the sunrise would begin during the eclipse which would "wash out" the colours of the moon as it turned red. "Sponsoring such events plays a key role in inspiring our youth to join the space sector and study science and engineering to acquire the required skills to succeed and excel in space and astronomy", he added.

By observing the Moon with infrared cameras, such as the one on NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, scientists get a chance to see what happens when the surface of the Moon cools quickly.

The Moon gradually returns to its normal color and brightens as it emerges from Earth's shadow.
