Kevin Love signs 4-year, $120M extension with Cleveland Cavaliers

The all-star forward signed a new four-year, $120-million contract with the Cavaliers, who are beginning anew following LeBron James' departure. ESPN's Brian Windhorst reports Love took roughly $8 million less than the full maximum contract available. This quickly became a partnership the second we began these discussions.

Now the challenge for Love - who has endured knee and back injuries throughout his National Basketball Association tenure - will be to reignite his role as a No. 1 option, which he excelled at in Minnesota but was never asked to do in Cleveland.

"I came here to win". And Kevin didn't shy away from saying, 'I want to be a part of the Cavaliers moving forward.

"We are very excited to announce Kevin's long-term commitment to the Cavaliers and Cleveland", general manager Koby Altman said. "Collaboration and winning matter greatly to Kevin and that was reflected in this extension", Altman said. First, some people wondered if the Cavs would shop Love as a way to both clear the decks a bit and bring in more talent or draft assets.

Love said he is "super excited and I couldn't be happier".

"I think guys putting on their hard hats and coming to work every day - that has to be the identity to our team, and I think we have guys that are cut from that cloth and are going to be willing to go out there and prove themselves". For weeks and weeks the Cavaliers were rumored to trade Love but now It seems that they are showing their loyalty to him as the new face of the team.

Love shot 42 percent on 3-pointers last season, tying a career high, as the Cavaliers advanced to the NBA Finals. He averaged 17.6 points and 9.3 rebounds last season when he made his fifth All-Star team.

Instead, the Cavs opted to keep Love in Cleveland, with eyes on making the playoffs this year and beyond.

So why did Love sign the remaining years of his prime away to the Cavs, who are admittedly in the midst of a youth movement?

The 29-year-old recorded 31 double-doubles and scored 20 points or more on 26 occasions, including a season-high 38 points in just 25 minutes versus Miami on November 28.

On an historic level, Love is one of only eight players to tally 11,000 points, 7,000 rebounds and 1,000 three-pointers and the only player in league history to post a career average of at least 10.0 rebounds while knocking down at least 1,000 three-pointers.
