The penumbra is the partial outer shadow, and the umbra is the full, dark shadow.

Essentially, the Earth will pass between the Sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the latter and forming a total eclipse.

The effect known as Rayleigh Scattering causes refracted sunlight in the atmosphere to filter out bands of visible colour other than red and orange.

Who can see the blood moon this July?

And do not forget to try and catch the event as soon as you can because the moon will only be in a state of total eclipse until 11.15 pm when it will start to emerge and regain its normal appearance.

It is safe to look at a lunar eclipse without any protective eyewear. It is entirely safe to view directly with the naked eye, telescopes or binoculars, say experts.
