Turkey's purchase of S-400 risk for NATO: US general

Turkey's purchase of S-400 risk for NATO: US general

"Turkey buying Patriot systems from the USA instead of S-400 systems from Russian Federation would be good for Turkey, the U.S. and NATO", Ozgur Unluhisarcikli, Ankara office director of German Marshall Fund of the United States, told Arab News.

According to Wolters, if the purchase is made, it "would give a weapon used by "known foes" of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation deep insight into the radar-evading F-35 fighter jets arriving in growing numbers in Europe".

"Anything that an S-400 can do that affords it the ability to better understand a capability like the F-35 is certainly not to the advantage of the coalition", Wolters noted, also underlying that he finds the whole issue worrying.

USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials have repeatedly warned Ankara that the Russian missile system can not be integrated into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation air and missile-defense system.

The planned purchase has become a major source of friction, and USA lawmakers have warned Ankara could face sanctions if it goes ahead with the purchase of the S-400.

Turkey's plans to buy the Russian air and missile defense system have raised tensions with Washington, and USA lawmakers are seeking to block the transfer of any F-35 jets to Turkey.

Washington and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials strive to prevent the sophisticated Russian-built anti-aircraft weapon system from collecting information about the US-made all-weather stealth multirole warplanes, technically known as the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighters, just as they are gaining a foothold in Europe.

It also signals an improvement in relations between Ankara and Washington following a falling out over Turkey's deal with Moscow to buy the Russian-made S-400 missile system.
