Dramatic video shows police pursuit, officer shooting through auto windshield

A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer's body camera captured the deadly high-speed chase of two murder suspects, during which the officer opened fire through the windshield of his police cruiser.

The chase eventually ends with the suspects crashing their vehicle and Umuna fatally shooting one suspect who had tried to reverse the auto toward police. During the pursuit, the two suspects fired almost three dozen rounds out of their vehicle at the officers, police said.

Police officers in Las Vegas were investigating the shooting of a 25-year-old man when they received a notification about a black Ford Expedition which was apparently fleeing the scene. The passenger, identified as Fidel Miranda, 23, moved into the driver's seat and began to reverse toward officers before being shot and killed, according to police.

"When you look at that video you get a clear picture of what officers were dealing with", said Assistant Sheriff Tim Kelly. Officers don't specifically train for the situation, which "may come up in one in 1,000 stops that the officer may come across", Kelly said. The victim later died.

Firing from a moving vehicle, it's likely impossible to ensure a safe backstop and the safety of civilians.

Officer Umana then tried to pull over the suspects a little after 9:31 a.m. and that's when the pursuit started. Another police auto joined the chase, and Umana issued a warning to the officer to stay back. "Nunez exited the vehicle as it was still moving near Hollingsworth Elementary School, 1776 E. Ogden Ave., and ran up steps outside of the school and attempted to enter, but the door was locked", Kelly said. "Miranda was declared deceased by medical personnel on scene". This is the 10th officer-involved shooting in Las Vegas this year. Nunez was found with a gun, reported stolen in northern Las Vegas on May 20. He was caught and booked into the Clark County Detention Center.

Kelly praised Umana and Soloman as courageous and heroic.
