Lava bomb flies through roof of Hawaii tour boat, injuring 23

A lava explosion at the ocean entry in lower Puna injured a dozen people aboard a lava tour boat this morning.

One passenger broke a leg while others suffered burns.

He didn't observe "any major explosions", so he navigated his vessel closer, to about 250 yards away from the lava.

The total number of people on the boat was not immediately known, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.

A projectile from the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii struck a boat carrying people watching lava from the two-month-old eruption, injuring 23, the fire department said.

There was no further information on the migrants or how they got stranded. Eight women and children were taken to Lampedusa for medical treatment.

She described the boat as "covered with lava".

Lava flows that have been cascading into the sea have formed a brand new, small island off the coast of Hawaii after a crater at Mount Kilauea exploded with the force of a 5.2-magnitude natural disaster. 'Just really good people'.

After the explosion, those in the tour group quickly pulled together to help one another, Turpin said.

"What I saw in humanity this morning was incredible". We expect a high rate of earthquakes (25-35 per hour) to continue until the next collapse/explosion event occurs later today. Several companies operate such tours.

Officials say it can be risky to get close to lava entering the ocean, because clouds of acid and fine glass can be created as the transfer takes place. The Coast Guard said tour vessels have operated in the area going back at least 20 years.

Tourists take pictures as lava enters the ocean.

For decades, including the "61g flow" of 2016, Babb said the observatory has recommended a safe zone of 300 meters from the ocean entry, both landward and seaward.

"[Four] passengers taken by ambulance to the hospital, one seriously injured with a fractured femur".

Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources said an investigation was underway, and would examine initial reports that the tour boat had strayed outside the US Coast Guard-established safety zone.
