Woman found alive week after driving off cliff near Big Sur

After she was missing for six days, 23-year-old Angela Hernandez has been found and rescued after surviving a 200-foot crash off of Highway 1 in Big Sur. Miss Hernandez said she had swerved to avoid hitting an animal along the famously winding stretch of Highway 1 and lost control, plummeting to the beach below.

When she was found her auto was partially submerged in the water and she was able to walk and talk as police scaled down the cliff on ropes to hoist her to safety on Friday. She says she met so many lovely people for her rescue and help bringing her up the cliff. She was pulled up by ropes and taken to a hospital.

Detective Rosemerry Blankswade, a spokeswoman for the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, was relieved to hear Hernandez had been found. To stay hydrated, she used a radiator hose to siphon water from a nearby stream, according to KGO-TV. About 8 a.m. July 6, she notified her family that she was continuing the drive, the flier said.

One hiker stayed with the woman while the other notified a campground host who then contacted authorities, CHP said. "That's weird. And then came around another bend and saw the vehicle", said Chelsea. She was driving from Portland to Lancaster in California to visit family. Search teams had been combing Highway 1 because Hernandez was last seen in surveillance footage on the roadway near Carmel as she made her way from Portland to her sister's home in Southern California, per ABC 7.

Sheriffs said she had told her sister she would stay overnight in a vehicle park before continuing her journey the next morning, but they had not heard from her after 6 July.

'My sister is alive, she's talking, and she's still trying to come to understand everything.

Hernandez's sister thanked rescuers on her Facebook page. Everybody that ... helped us through the whole thing and Angela will be OK.
