McDonald's Removing Salads from 3,000 Restaurants after Illness

More than 100 people in Iowa and IL have been sickened from a parasite possibly found in McDonald's salads, regulators from the two states said Thursday.

There are around 100 cases of people becoming sick in Iowa and IL and a handful of cases in surrounding states.

Eating healthy has it's perks, but one state healt official said if you are eating salad at McDonald's you might want to use caution.

Thai authorities had contacted the British Cave Rescue Council for help when the boys disappeared. But bursts of monsoon rain caused the water inside the cave to rise, leaving them trapped.


"We are closely monitoring this situation and cooperating with state and federal public health authorities as they further investigate", the fast-food chain said in a statement to Reuters.

It is spread by ingesting food or water contaminated with feces and not directly from one person to another.

The Food and Drug Administration says cyclosporiasis is associated with symptoms including: "diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements".

An initial investigation suggests a link to consumption of McDonald's salads, but health officials say they're investigating other sources. Other symptoms could include appetite and weight loss, intestinal pain, nausea and fatigue.

McDonald's said it is in the process of removing the salads from approximately 3,000 locations in the Midwest and re-supplying with different distributors.

"Cyclospora has been a growing risk in imported fresh fruits and vegetables in the US", food safety attorney Bill Marler said in a Friday email to the Miami Herald.

The illnesses are not concentrated in a specific part of IL, but spread across several counties, state public health officials said.

- People who think they might have symptoms of a Cyclospora infection should consult their health care professional. The disease can last from several days to months, and the condition may improve and then deteriorate again.
