Nadal-Djokovic match suspended after 3rd set

The 6-foot-10 Isner finally succumbed to the 6-foot-8 Anderson just before 8 p.m. local time in a grueling encounter full of plot twists in the longest men's semifinal in Wimbledon history.

Andy Murray's third-round match against Marcos Baghdatis in 2012 pushed the limit to 11.02pm and the time was exactly the same when Nadal netted a backhand to give Djokovic a two sets to one lead.

It was the longest semi-final ever played at Wimbledon, surpassing the four hours 44 minutes it took Djokovic to beat Juan Martin del Potro in 2013.

He then converted his first match point when Isner sent a shot wide - after 6 hours, 36 minutes.

"It was really tough for both of us". However, Anderson and Isner are just beginning their fourth set, so the match between Nadal and Djoker will be delayed slightly.

"I'm really not thinking about being an underdog or being a favourite", he said.

Brian Norton was the last South African man to reach the final in 1921.

Kevin Anderson and John Isner began their semi-final contest on Centre Court on Friday.

The match was the second-longest in professional tennis history, behind only Isner's record-setting 11-hour, five-minute first-round Wimbledon triumph over Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in 2010. He will take on the victor of the Djokovic-Nadal match in Sunday's final. It was the South African who played the much better game this set, returning serve extremely well and making very few unforced errors.

Those named Kevin Anderson are being offered a free "victory feast" for them and two friends - in honour of his three-set victory.

He fashioned three break points from the next rally and took the second, the first break of the set.

Pre-match, many underplayed Anderson and Isner's all-round on-court talents, thinking that it would be a long slog between two "serve-bots". But possibly under scoreboard pressure, the American's own service game wobbled when he was down 4-5, giving Anderson a break-point - and a set-point.

But the other three Grand Slam tournaments all play on until one player wins by two games.

Numerous best points came in the tiebreaker, including a 23-shot rally that Nadal finished off with a forehand half-volley drop shot to set up his first set point. The American roared and turned to his box as he took the third set on his third set point.
