One year after the publication of Timothy B. Tyson's The Blood of Emmett Till, the federal investigation into the murder of the 14-year-old black child at the hands of two white men has been reopened.

Till's remains were returned to Chicago where his mother insisted on a public funeral service with an open casket.

"She was glad things had changed (and she) thought the old system of white supremacy was wrong, though she had more or less taken it as normal at the time", Tyson told the magazine. Relatives of Till pushed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to reopen the case past year after publication of the book.

Donham, who turns 84 this month, now lives in North Carolina, AP reported.

Though the Justice Department has reopened its investigation-possibly due to Donham's comments to Tyson-it is not yet known if prosecutors will bring a new case against anyone connected to the murder.

Deborah Watts, co-founder of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation, said it's wonderful her cousin's killing is getting another look but declined to discuss details, saying: "None of us wants to do anything that jeopardizes any investigation".

Tyson, senior research scholar at the Center for Documentary Studies, published "The Blood of Emmett Till" a year ago, shedding new light on the 1955 lynching.

Images of his mutilated body gave witness to the depth of racial hatred in the Deep South and inspired civil rights campaigns. When Donham had testified in the Till case she said that the teen Till grabbed her and verbally threatened her.

"But perjury has a two-year statute of limitations in MS, so she's been free and clear of that since 1958 or so", Tyson said. I don't know what's - we don't know.

"That part's not true", she told Tyson, referring to her claims that Till had grabbed her and made verbal advances, as Sheila Weller reports for Vanity Fair.

Timothy Tyson said at a news conference Thursday that he was contacted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation several weeks after his book came out in January 2017. She resisted and pulled away, but Till approached her and got her by the waist, she said.
