Twitter purge: Don't be surprised if you lose followers

Former President Obama lost more than 2 million followers on Twitter this week as the social platform removed inactive and locked accounts from follower counts, according to a preliminary review by The Hill.

Twitter says for an average user, the follower count is likely to drop by 4 but for those having over thousands of followers the effect can be quite significant as is the case with Modi.

"The people who are doing the clean up on Twitter should be given the task to deal with graft in Kenya, I think they will wipe it out completely", said one Twitter user. Twitter had announced two days ago that it is starting to remove some Twitter handles which were locked earlier for suspicious behaviour.

By cracking down on fake accounts, Twitter hopes to restore faith in the controversy-ridden platform where influence-from entertainment to politics-can be inflated by automated or fake followers, the New York Times reports.

CEO Ezekiel Mutua is another casualty whose account has dropped from over 100,000 followers to a meagre 34,000.

The Twitter crackdown has cost former President Barack Obama millions of followers. Controversial blogger, Cyprian Nyakundi, has lost quite a lot of followers, from over 1 million to now below 700K.

Twitter locks accounts when it detects "sudden changes in account behavior", like tweeting a large volume of unsolicited replies or mentions - in other words, signs that it's engaging in spam or bot-like activity.

Tech executive Elon Musk saw the smallest dip, 0.3 percent, or about 71,000 followers.

Meanwhile, HBO's Thrones and Westworld nabbed 22 and 21 nominations each, while the dark comedy Barry scored 13 nods. She wasn't nominated for an Emmy in 2017, either.

Prominent people and celebrities have started noticing the drop in followership. "We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's Legal, Policy and Trust & Safety Lead, said in a blog post.
